RICHMOND — The first meeting of 2018 for the Richmond Community Historical Society will be discussion about a warmer-weather project — getting the back wall of the Crew House Museum on Main Street re-pointed.

A major undertaking of 2017, according to historical society officers, involved having two sides of the original brick on the building constructed in 1826 re-pointed by workers from Montenery Masonry of Yorkville. Grants from the Pugliese Foundation and the Wherry-Albaugh Foundation were received toward the estimated $10,000 cost, and the nonprofit organization looked to its membership and the community for assistance in generating the remainder.

They were not disappointed, according to Sandy Judy, association secretary, as many contributions were received, including from individuals and organizations, among them the Richmond Lions Club.

“We were so pleased with the public response,” Judy said, noting the association will meet Jan. 16 at the Crew House, beginning at 7 p.m., barring extreme weather conditions. The membership will discuss obtaining estimates and pursuing grants for the back wall project. It also welcomes donations toward that, and contributions would be tax-exempt as the organization has a 501(c) 3 status. Checks can be made payable to the Richmond Community Historical Society with “re-pointing brick” in the memo line. They can be mailed to the historical society at P.O. Box 1, Richmond, Ohio, 43944. Inquiries can be directed to (740) 765-4534.

The January meeting also will include discussion on whether or not to hold its St. Patrick’s Day dance in March at the Glenn Mills Community Senior Center, which has been a tradition of recent years.

The historical society meets every other month on the third Tuesday at the Crew House Museum, beginning at 7 p.m. Anyone interested in local history is welcome to attend meetings or join the historical society. Annual dues are $5. For information, call (740) 765-4534.

On Dec. 3, the group held its annual Christmas covered-dish dinner at the museum where Phil Judy, president, welcomed those attending. Mark Judy gave the blessing. Favors were donated by former Richmond resident Linda Hout Moody.

The group will retain the same office-holders for 2018. Aside from Phil and Sandy Judy, they are Don Swickard, vice president, and his wife, Becky, treasurer.

During 2017, the historical society held its annual Quaker Day celebration in September. “It was one of our most successful ever,” noted Sandy Judy.

It also held a Halloween dance; organized Sunday open houses in the summer months; welcomed visitors as it continues to do not only to tour the whole museum but the Jefferson Union High School memorabilia rooms enjoyed in 2017 by several classes holding reunions; sponsored the annual Memorial Day parade in the community as it will do so again; and held a Veterans Day service.

The historical society has a variety of Richmond memorabilia items for sale, including notecards, T-shirts, pottery and ornaments.
