Weirton Woman’s Club extends generosity

WEIRTON — The Weirton Woman’s Club held a Christmas luncheon at its December meeting at St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church.

President Diana Durst presided, welcoming guests, including daughter Michelle; the Rev. Andrew Melko and his wife, Matkaila, and Helen Petrovich, members of the church; and Elaine Ferrari and Doris Sadler.

Molly Mosser gave the invocation and led in opening exercises.

Monetary donations were made to the United Way of Weirton; HOBY, an acronym for Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership; the Weirton Christian Center; and the Salvation Army, the latter of which also was presented donations of food and toys.

Musical entertainment was provided by the Brooke High School Madrigal Choir under the direction of Celesta Byard.

A Christmas sweater contest was held with chocolate prizes awarded in various categories. Member voting determined the winners.

The club’s garden department provided favors of Santa ornaments and chocolates; the literary department decorated; and the art department presented gift cards for door prizes.

Maj. Nettie Morton of the Salvation Army read the story titled “The Three Trees.”

Future meetings and events were announced, including:

¯ Today, a writing workshop and executive board meeting at the Mary H. Weir Public Library;

¯ Feb. 5, noon, general club meeting and box lunch at St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church where the “Life of Abraham Lincoln” program will feature Jim Crouse, re-enactor;

¯ Feb. 13, garden department;

¯ Feb. 19, literary department;

¯ Feb. 26, art department; and

¯ April 22, book review luncheon with the book to be announced.
