Free tax advice offered

at library locations

STEUBENVILLE — A representative from H&R Block will be visiting library branches to offer free tax advice, according to the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County.

Dates and locations include: March 20 at the Toronto Branch, 1-3 p.m.; March 21 at the Schiappa Branch, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and at the Tiltonsville Branch, 2-4 p.m.; March 22 at the Brilliant Branch, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and at the Dillonvale-Mount Pleasant Branch, 3-5 p.m.; and March 23 at the Adena Branch, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Children: Make a craft at the library on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. Registration is required.

Adults: Color pages designed for adults today at 6 p.m.

Dillonvale-Mount Pleasant Branch, (740) 769-2090

Children: Babygarten, for parent with children birth to two, will be at 11:15 a.m. on Thursday. This is a lap-sit program that involves songs, rhymes and books.

Adults: Book Club will meet for discussion on Tuesday at 10 a.m. Call to join.

Schiappa Branch, (740) 264-6166

Adults and Teens: Teen Gaming is set for 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday. Participants can play games on Wii, Playstation and Xbox 360.

A web searching class on Wednesday at 6 p.m. will offer insight on search engines and how to use specific search terms. Register by calling the library.

Children: Tot Time offers an opportunity for parents and children ages 2-4 to engage in songs, rhymes and books at the library. There is no registration. It is scheduled on Mondays, March 19 and 26 at 6 p.m.; Tuesdays, March 20 and 27 at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m.; and Wednesdays, March 21 and 28 at 11 a.m.

Babygarten will be held Thursday, beginning at 10:30 a.m.

West Liberty Lions Club

to host dinner March 25

WEST LIBERTY — The West Liberty Lions Club is hosting a turkey dinner fundraiser, which will be held from 12:15 p.m. to 3 p.m. on March 25 at the West Liberty Federated Church, 557 Van Meter Way, West Liberty.

Patrons can dine in or get take-out orders. Children age 3 and under eat for free.

Proceeds will benefit Lions projects.

Jefferson County Friends of

NRA banquet on April 13

BLOOMINGDALE — The third-annual Jefferson County Friends of NRA banquet is set for April 13 at The Countryside, 91 township Road 262.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for games, drawings and a live auction.

“By attending this event, you are securing our shooting sports traditions for future generations,” a news release notes. “Friends of NRA events provide invaluable support to firearms education and training programs in our local community and across the state of Ohio. This event raises funds for the National Rifle Association, and 50 percent of those funds raised are used specifically for grants that promote shooting sports and activities.”

Jefferson County 4-H Shooting Sports program has been the recipient of a Friends of NRA grant for the last two years, which has made possible the purchase of firearms and shooting equipment. The program now offers shotgun, rifle, pistol, steel targets and archery to its participants.

The Shooting Sports program has grown each year in its attendance, the news release notes, and has taught children otherwise not familiar with firearms, the importance of safety and correct handling as well as target practice.

The 4-H Shooting Sports program is open to all county youth ages 9-18. Interested participants can contact Amy Browning, coordinator, at (740) 632-8025.

Winemakers elect officers,

are reminded about events

STEUBENVILLE — The Tri-State Winemakers Club met March 8 with President Derek Sliday opening the meeting attended by 28 members.

Two wine-tastings were announced, including one from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Wellsburg Elk’s Club, the other from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. April 21 at St. Paul’s Church in Weirton.

Under wine discussion, Wendell Barner discussed the American Wine Society Event held March 4 in Pittsburgh. His involvement was the topic on common wine flaws — characteristics, causes, prevention and solution. Barner won two silver and two bronze awards in the competition for his wine.

New officers were elected with Jim Cope as president; Barner, vice president; Cindy Parker, secretary; and Linda Cole, treasurer.

Hosts for the evening were Ben and Tammy Beswick, Jim and Anna Chaney and Ed and Vickie Ziegler.

Next month’s meeting will be held on April 12 with host/hostess Okey and Sondra Nestor will serve as hosts at the next meeting, which will be held April 12 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Steubenville where the clubs meets the second Thursday of the month.

Toronto Sunrise Seniors

welcome new members

TORONTO — Gary and Sharon Grimm were welcomed as new members to the March 9 meeting of the Toronto Sunrise Seniors held at the Roosevelt Center.

President Barbara Pritts conducted the post-dinner meeting where Beverly Solomon from the Toronto Apothecary provided information about a new program from the Ohio Department of Aging called “Steady U.”

The purpose of the initiative is to prevent falls and fall-related injuries associated with certain types of medications. There will be a free review of medicine from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 6 at the Roosevelt Center. Lunch will be provided if reservations are made by calling the Toronto Apothecary.

Laura Sheets, secretary, conducted the roll call of officers and read the minutes of the previous meeting. Treasurer, Judy Sabol, gave the financial report. Nina Kavanagh, social secretary, announced early March birthdays and anniversaries.

A chicken and rib dinner cruise aboard the Gateway Clipper is planned for July 31. An overnight trip to Put in Bay is set for June 25-26. The second day features a ride on the Cuyahoga Valley Railroad train through the Cuyahoga National Park, a tour of the Stan Hewett Mansion and dinner at Spaghetti Warehouse in Akron. Anyone interested can contact Pritts for additional information and cost.

In other business, the group discussed the responsibilities of kitchen committee work.

The Mothers’ and Fathers’ Day banquet will be catered by Connie’s Corner and held at the Karaffa Elementary Building on May 11, beginning at 5 p.m.

Jay Smith was honored as member of the month, and members were taught some Irish slang in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. Mary Lou Deku and John Lash were labeled as “jammy” since they won the 50-50 drawing.

Bingo winners included Lucy Timko, Peggy Nordenger, Barbara Pritts, Betty Mossor, Mary Lou Deku, Marcella McKnight, Marsha McConnell, Helen Baynes, Nancy Bodrog, Gloria Howard, Susan Kulstad, Bonnie Wilson, and Jay Smith. Scat winners were Gloria Howard, Nina Kavanagh, Nancy Bodrog, Mary Lou Deku and Judy Sabol.

The next meeting will be held Friday.

Brooke libraries to close early

The Brooke County Public Library and its Follansbee branch will close at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday for staff training.
