Weirton Woman’s Club recognizes women veterans, presents officers

WEIRTON — The Weirton Woman’s Club held its March meeting at St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church with Diana Durst presiding and welcoming guest Sylvia Hornick.

Delores Azzarello gave the inspiration and led in opening exercises.

Members adjourned for a special tea honoring women veterans in celebration of Women’s History Month. Yvonne Tuchalski was introduced and spoke on her career in the Army. Durst presented her with a certificate of appreciation for her service to the country.

Sandy Robbins introduced member Pamela Makricosta who presented brief stories of several women in history, including March Harris Jones, a.k.a. Mother Jones; Lillian Gilbreth; Hypatia of Alexandria; Eleanor Roosevelt; Pearl Buck; Cleopatra; Katherine Johnson of NASA; and Anna Jarvis, founder of Mother’s Day.

The meeting resumed with minutes read by Helen Gibson and the treasurer’s report given by Kay Kemplar. Gibson read the call to the state convention at the Greenbrier for March 16-17.

The slate of new officers were 2018-10 was presented by Maralyn Ridgeway, chairman of the selection committee. They are: President, Helen Gibson; second vice president, Carol Village; secretary, Jane Watson; financial secretary, Lea Shirer; treasurer, Kay Kemplar; and first vice president, pending. The officers will be installed at the May banquet.

Members presented stuffed animals and grooming aids to Operation Smile.

Numerous event dates were noted, including: April 17, Sheltered Workshop dance; March 22, executive board; March 19, literary department; March 26, art department; April 2, next general meeting, an ice cream social at the Mary H. Weir Public Library; and April 7, calendar luncheon at Undo’s, beginning at noon. Tickets to the latter are available by calling Sharon Neely at (304) 797-1945.

The book review luncheon will be held at 2 p.m. on April 22 at Undo’s. Molly Mossor will review “The Life of Natalie Wood.” For tickets call Sandy Robbins at (304) 723-4668.

The club encourages students interested in a scholarship from the GFWC scholarships program to contact Delores Azzarello at (304) 723-0954 for instructions and details. Applications must include two current letters of recommendation, a transcript of grades and a copy of an official letter of acceptance from an accredited school. Applications must be postmarked by April 1.
