Autism walk set for Saturday

FOLLANSBEE — A walk to benefit local youth with autism will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Follansbee Middle School.

Admission is $5, with proceeds going to Ryan’s Prayer of Hope and Healing, a grassroots group that has provided computer tablets to aid local youth with autism in communicating with others.

There will be live music, a Chinese auction, other activities and gently used items to aid people with autism.

Cookies and painting event set

WELLSBURG — The Brooke County Library will hold a “Cookies & Canvas” painting fundraiser at 5:30 p.m. on June 7.

Deborah Ross Smith, paintbrush social instructor, will direct participants in creating a patriotic painting.

The cost is $35 per person, which includes all supplies and refreshments. Participants should be 13 and older and wear appropriate clothing for painting. Groups are welcome, but registration and payment should be done by June 4 by calling (304) 737-1551.

Computer job help offered

FOLLANSBEE — The Follansbee Branch Library will be offering computer help with resumes and online job applications from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. May 30. Call (304) 527-0860 to register for the free assistance.

Volunteers to be honored

WEIRTON — Volunteer literacy providers in Hancock and Brooke counties will be honored at 6 p.m. on Tuesday during a volunteer appreciation ceremony sponsored by the Mary H. Weir Public Library, the Weirton Area Literacy Council and Literacy W.Va.

The celebration is open to volunteers, tutors, their students and families associated with the library programs. The guest speaker will be Mel Coleman. Current officers of the Weirton Area Literacy Council include Yudith Staskey, Joann Morrison, Lynn Bish and Ed Giacchino.

Anyone interested in volunteering with literacy is invited to attend. Refreshments and door prizes will be offered. The celebration is free and open to the public. The Mary H. Weir Public Library is an agency of Weirton United Way. RSVP to Pamela Makricosta, Literacy and Lifelong Learning coordinator, by Saturday at (304) 797-8510 or (304) 670-8489.

Book club to meet May 31

WELLSBURG — The Brooke County Public Library’s book club will meet at 5 p.m. May 31 to discuss “Princess Found” by Sarah Culberson.

Attendees will receive the June book, “Obituary Writer” by Ann Hood. The club is free and open to the public.

Park to hold Women’s Golf Day

WELLSBURG — Brooke Hills Park will have a special event for women golfers from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. June 5. Women may golf nine holes at no cost during the event, which will include demonstrations, vendors and refreshments.
