‘Momsters’ program for Fort Steuben DAR chapter

STEUBENVILLE — The Fort Steuben Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution met May 12 at Froehlich’s Classic Corner Restaurant for a luncheon and business session.

Chapter Regent Karen Blanc presided. Opening ceremonies involved Flag Chairman Rebecca Hersko, Second Vice Regent Vickie Joseph and Chaplain, Bonny Slemmer.

Blanc introduced guest speaker Jan Augustein who is the NSDAR Women’s Issues vice chairman, East Central Division. Her presentation — “Momsters — Eccentric Mothers in History” — included insight on Lady Frances Gray, Henrietta Green, Queen Victoria, Belle Starr and Ma Barker, all of whom were “evil in many ways and had very unconventional styles of raising their children.” She also included information on Anna Jarvis, the founder of Mother’s Day.

The business meeting included reports by Joseph, minutes, and Treasurer Beverly Livingston, who reminded members to pay their dues for the 2018-19 year.

Registrar Susan Welch, who was commended for her hard work during the past year, reported that Emily McKinney and Janet Rymer have been approved for membership and will be inducted at the September meeting.

Scholarship Committee Chairmen Katherine Skerbetz and Jeanmarie Swartzmiller also gave reports. Thirty-two students from nine local high schools participated in this year’s contest. Ashley Nicole Eby of Brooke High School won the $500 scholarship. She plans to attend West Virginia University as a Foundation Scholar.

DAR Good Citizenship Chairman Denise White announced that Christina Joy Dill as the winner of that contest. American History Chairman Wadeanne Nardo reported that Ireland McCafferty of Edison High School was the winner of $50 and a certificate.

Junior American Citizens Chairman JoAnn Morrison noted 30 students representing the Fort Steuben Chapter won national level awards. They are: First place from Harding Middle School, Kaliegh Deserocher, Carmen Nocera, Alisandra Sagun, Victoria Youngkin, Brianna Bonar, Olivia Price, Jessica Scott, Paige Toothman and Shapree Birden; first place from Jefferson Christian School, Allen Moro, Philamena Miravalle, Christena Recczanik, Jonathan Pulice, Angela Wendt, Megan Rouse, Julia Anderson, and Carl Novaski; second place from Harding Middle School, Emily Rosachi, Cooper Blackburn, Ashley Seifert, Nathan Yaskanich, Corryn Lahr and Shaira Rose; third place from Harding Middle School, Izzy Leake, Paris Cassidy, Jackie Crabtree, Kamryn Ligget and Lindsay Bushy; and honorable mention, Jarrett Cunningham and Rebecca Schweitzer.

Chapter members expressed their appreciation for “the tremendous efforts” of the students, teachers and Morrison.

Under new business, members welcomed and recognized Pat Albaugh, who has been a member of the Fort Steuben Chapter for 62 years.

Blanc noted chapter members will participate in the flag-raising and pledge of allegiance at the opening ceremony for Frontier Days on June 2 at Fort Steuben.

Jan Augustein will serve as chairman for the chapter development and revitalization commission which will be held Aug. 11 at the Hudson Library in Hudson Ohio.

Come December, Union Cemetery will be recognized by Wreathes Across America, it was noted.

Nominating Committee Chairman Nancy Valles asked members to consider volunteering for a committee or officer position for the next term. The nominating committee will be meeting in the summer to discuss current vacancies and a new slate for the 2019-22 term.

The next meeting will be held Sept. 8 at Historic Fort Steuben.
