Paris Presbyterian Church

to host annual Community Day

PARIS, Pa. — Paris Presbyterian Church will be holding its third-annual Community Day from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday

“The purpose of this day is to honor first responders for their commitment to protecting our community and to bring the community together,” a spokesperson explained. “The parade of fire trucks and police cruisers begins at 11:10 a.m.”

Local fire departments have been invited to make their own chili for a chili cook-off, which will be judged at noon. Throughout the day, there will be activities for children, including face-painting, games, crafts, bouncy house and rides on a fire truck. The Hanover Township Volunteer Fire Department will bring a truck for children to explore, and Weirton Police will provide a K-9 demonstration.

Another element of the festivities will be music on the deck throughout the day with the Chrisagis Brothers performing and a skit conducted by the Ozark Mountain Crew. Annette Dashofy, a local author who writes about first responders, will be selling her books.

There will be a blessing over all first responders at 12:15 p.m.

Brooke Democratic Executive

Committee meeting scheduled

WELLSBURG — The Brooke County Democratic Executive Committee will meet at 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 9 at the Brooke County Library.

The meeting will involve reorganizing the committee with the assistance of Belinda Biafore. Questions can be directed to Rich McCullough, president, at (304) 527-0244.

Toronto Senior Citizens to hold

picnic Aug. 9 at Stratton Park

TORONTO — Doris Matyas presided at the Toronto Senior Citizens meeting July 26 with Toots Metzger and Kathleen Elliott welcomed as guests.

Lola Swanagan gave the blessing for the covered-dish dinner. Joyce Zimmerman led members in opening exercises.

Nancy Stanak discussed trips, including to Hartville, Aug. 16; the Columbiana dinner-theater on Oct. 3; and the Christmas dinner-theater in Sugarcreek on Nov. 28. There are a few seats remaining, she noted. Those interested can call (740) 537-2895 or (740) 537-3064.

Fran Sheets read the roll call and minutes and Rosemary Bonofine, the treasurer’s report.

Terry Elson won the door prize, and Ag Rock won the 50/50 drawing. Bingo winners were Tim Elson, Emma Spicer, Mary Scott, Barbara Schroyer, Judy Bickler, Carole Eddy and Rosemary Bonofine. Scat winners were Mary Scott, Judy Bickler and Terry Mamula.

The picnic will be held at noon on Aug. 9 at the Stratton Park.

Marland Heights 5K Classic

Run, Walk set for Aug. 10

WEIRTON — Registration has begun for the annual Marland Heights 5K Classic Run and Fitness Walk, set for Aug. 10.

The event will begin and end at Marland Heights Park, with races beginning at 6:30 p.m. It will include a 3.1-mile run, a 2-mile fitness walk and a youth fun run for children 12 years of age and under, with awards to be presented in several categories.

The cost for early registration is $20 for adults, $15 for teens and youths and $2 for the youth fun run. Registration will be held at the Millsop Community Center through Aug. 9. T-shirts are available for those who register no later than Wednesday.

Registration will begin at 5:45 p.m. on the day of the race. A cookout will follow the race. For information, call (304) 797-8520.

United Mine Workers Local

scheduled to meet Saturday

HOPEDALE — The United Mine Workers of America Local 1304 will hold its regular meet on Saturday at Capraro’s in Hopedale.

The meeting will begin at 10 a.m., according to Larry Ward, secretary-treasurer.

Free bowling offered to youth

Tuesday at Holiday Lanes

WEIRTON — Free bowling will be offered to youth 18 and under from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday at Holiday Lanes.

Sponsored by Brooke & Hancock County Partnerships, the Northern Panhandle Prevention Consortium, Youth Services System, the Advocates for Substance Abuse Prevention and Brooke-Hancock Family Resource Network, it is one of several summer activities offered by the agencies to promote a drug-free lifestyle.

Student to discuss books

Diversity in books for young adults will be discussed by Angelee Kokoskinski, a participant in the Public Library Association’s Summer Inclusive Internship program, from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Brooke County Public Library and from noon to 1:30 p.m. Aug. 15 at its Follansbee branch.

She invites others to share their own comments on the books, which are displayed at the Brooke County Library and may be checked out.
