Members of St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, 604 Colliers Way, Weirton, held their first “Blessing of First Responders” on Aug. 19. “The purpose of the day was to say thank you to our first responders for the difficult job they do every day to protect and keep the community safe,” a church spokesperson said. The day’s agenda included blessing members of the police and firefighters department and their vehicles and providing a luncheon in the church hall following the outdoor service. Church members extended appreciation to the Weirton Firefighters International Association of Firefighters Local 948 and the Weirton Police Department for their help in notifying members about the event. Among participants were, front, from left, the Rev. Andrew Nelko, Brandon Palmeri and Stevie Jo Bananio; middle, Darrin Hamilton, Jerry Shumate, Jason Kazmirski, Jim Hirkala, Shane Roush, Kevin Himmerlrick, Scott Schrader and Joe DeStephano; and back, Mike Serafine.
