Wellsburg Lions Club

to hold steak fry

WELLSBURG — The Wellsburg Lions Club will hold its annual steak fry at 5 p.m. Aug. 23 at Brooke Hills Park’s Bald Eagle Shelter.

The cost is $25, which includes steak, baked potato, salad, roll and beverages.

Proceeds support a scholarship awarded each year to a Brooke High School graduate and various other community projects, including vision screenings for local students and residents in need and efforts worldwide to provide eye care and glasses to the poor.

Toronto Seniors

hold annual picnic

TORONTO — The Toronto Senior Citizens held their annual picnic at the Stratton Park on Aug. 9 with Mary Alice Meyer giving the blessing.

The shelter house was decorated by Judy Bickler for the luau. Barbara Schroyer won the door prize, and Don Swickard won the 50/50 drawing. Terry Mamula and Rich Dobbs won the corn hole toss. Rich Dobbs and Robbie France won the balloon toss. Barb Losey and David Krause won the golf game.

Bingo winners were Rosemary Bonofine, Carole Eddy, Rich Dobbs, Virginia DaFoe, Laura VanDyke and Arlene Zahniser. Prizes were won by Lester Grimes, Lisa Rex, Rich Dobbs, Lola Swanagan, Barbara Lyons, Judy Bickler, Mel Simpson, Sharon Sims, Irene Simcox, Laura Mamula, Joyce Dobbs, Frank Vostatek and Mary Kay Petras. Scat winners were Carole Eddy, Judy Bickler, Karen Krause and Joyce Dobbs.

The next meeting will be held Aug. 23 at the Roosevelt Building.

Car show Saturday

to help Hounds’ Haven

HOPEDALE — Gables Care Center in Hopedale will sponsor its seventh- annual car show this weekend and has chosen Hounds’ Haven animal shelter as the recipient of proceeds from the event.

The car show will be held from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday on the care center grounds, located at 351 Lahm Drive. All makes and models, including classic cars, will be featured, with prizes to be awarded and refreshments available.

In addition, representatives from Hounds’ Haven will be on hand along with several “makes and models” of furry friends, available for adoption to loving homes, a spokesperson noted.

Hopedale Muskie Club:

A season of success

HOPEDALE — Hopedale Muskie Club 18 has had fishing success this summer with several of its members ranked nationally.

David White is ranked No. 1 in the men’s master’s division. Also in the men’s division are: Bill Zonker, No. 13; Bernie Klug, No. 20; Chester Snezek, No. 43; and Michael Rouse, No. 70.

Women rankings are: Linda Zonker, No. 3; Donna Ball, No. 11; and Sandy Petrozzi, No. 22.

Chapter 18 held several tournaments with three more this season. The June tournament was an open tournament with 19 fish reported. Mike Rouse caught a 38-inch and a 42-inch fish; David White caught seven fish with a 47-inch the largest; Steve Russell had four releases with a 35-inch one the largest; and Jim Cook caught four, with a 40-inch the largest.

July’s outing was held at Piedmont Lake with reports not yet in. There will be a tournament Aug. 25 at Leesville Lake.

The top club releases place David White at 52 fish with 606 points. Bill Zonker has 21 releases for 253 points, and Bernie Klug with 24 fish and 222 points. The women’s grouping puts Linda Zonker with 12 fish and 167 points. Donna Ball has three fish for 64 points, and Sandy Petrozzi has three fish for 32 points.

The club purchased 19 rods for the children’s fishing derby held at Pine Valley Sportsman’s Club lakes.

Meetings are held at Pine Valley Sportman’s Club in Hopedale. The next meeting will be Sept. 6, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Civil War symposium

scheduled Saturday

FLUSHING — The Ohio Valley Civil War Roundtable will present its annual summer symposium on Saturday.

The presentations will be held at the Underground Railroad Museum in Flushing. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. for the symposium, which is free and open to the public, but donations are welcomed.

The schedule is as follows:

— 9 a.m.: Tom Buckley, “A Soldier for 100 Days, the National Guard of Belmont and Harrison Counties, May to September 1864.” Buckley is a 1997 graduate of Ohio University who served as an adjunct assistant professor of history at Belmont College. His interest in Civil War history began with a visit to Gettysburg in 1969. He is vice president of the OVCWR and a resident of Flushing.

— 10:15 a.n.: David Javersak, “Antebellum Wheeling.” Javersak holds degrees from West Liberty University, the University of Hawaii and West Virginia University. He is a retired professor and dean, having been on the staff at West Liberty University for 39 years.

He has written extensively on the history of the Ohio Valley, including Weirton, Wheeling and West Liberty. He is a West Virginia Hero and a Library Legend at the Ohio County Public Library. In 2015, he received the Lifetime Service Award from West Liberty. Javersak is a resident of Wheeling.

— 10:30 a.m.: Welcoming remarks from John Mattox, host, owner and curator of the Underground Railroad Museum

— 10:40 a.m.: Joe Laker, “The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad During the American Civil War.” Laker holds degrees from Marian College and Indiana University.

He taught at St. Olaf College, Indiana University and Wheeling Jesuit, retiring in 2008 with the rank of professor emeritus. He taught courses on a wide variety of areas of history, including modern Japan, United States and Latin America. He is the author of the “Photo History, Wheeling Jesuit University” and has written articles on Japanese history and events surrounding the Civil War.

Following the symposium, the museum will remain open to visitors.

Extension service

offers cooking class

WELLSBURG — The Brooke County West Virginia University Extension Service will hold a class covering healthy and economical cooking tips from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. each Tuesday from Sept. 11 through Oct. 30, except Oct. 2, and Nov. 20 at the Brooke County Public Library.

The class is free, but participants must be able to attend at least six of the eight classes.
