Academy of Lifelong Learning holds fall open house

Variety of classes kick off on Oct. 1

STEUBENVILLE — The Academy of Lifelong Learning previewed its schedule of classes and events during its fall semester open house Sept. 15 at the St. Joseph Center, Franciscan University of Steubenville.

The academy is an educational and social organization for area residents over 50 and is sponsored by the Franciscan University of Steubenville. It offers ongoing educational opportunities with the emphasis on a peer-led, peer-taught learning environment.

Iris Craig is president of the academy. Other leaders are Jan Rainbolt, vice president; Joanie Westover, secretary; and Judy Irvin, treasurer.

The six-week schedule of classes at various locations begins Oct. 1, in addition to tours of three downtown Steubenville churches and a visit to the River Museum in Wellsville.

The fees are $60 per person and $100 for married couples, a cost that entitles members to all classes. There is a 10 percent discount for enrolling a new member.

Some of the class topics are: “Understanding Social Media Today and Its Impact Upon Our Culture;” “The World Within: Mary Todd’s Triumph and Tragedy as First Lady;” “All the World’s A Stage: The Life and Legacy of John Wilkes Booth;” “Believe It Before You See It;” “Handmade Greeting Cards;” “The Pen Is Mightier;” “Immigration Today;” “Falconry;” “The Ghost of Owl Town;” “The History of Belly Dancing;” “U.S. Supreme Court Landmark Rulings;” and “Revitalization,” which will be held at Leonardo’s Coffeehouse at 159 N. Fourth St.
