Alpha Mu Chapter notes years of membership

CARROLLTON — The Alpha Mu Chapter meeting of Delta Kappa Gamma was held Sept. 8 with Barbara Pritts, president, extending the welcome to 34 members attending.

Pritts received a card from international on the death of Margery Gregg.

Darlene Smith received a thank-you from Harbor Point.

The fall executive committee meeting will be held Oct. 20 in Columbus.

Pritts, Gina Judy and Darlene Smith attended the “We Can Do It” leadership development workshop held June 12 at the Amish Door in Wilmot, Ohio. Increasing membership was discussed, and the membership challenge was explained.

Pritts encouraged members to bring potential candidates for Alpha Mu to the October meeting.

Membership Chairman Linda Nocera recognized members with varying years of service, including five years, Diana Thomas; 10 years, Kathy Pavlik, Vicki Littlejohn, Donna Iachini and Shanley Demitras; 25 years, Juanita Whisman; 30 years, Linda Anderson, Mary Barnes and Sandra Goddard; 35 years, Julie Blanton, Edwina McElwain, Sonja Mullen, Barbara Pritts and Jan Primack; 50 years, Shirley Riggleman; and 62 years, Cicely Worthington.

Recognized for perfect attendance were Donna Iachini, Gina Judy, Debbie Kovalesky, Barbara Losey, Edwina McElwain, Diane McElwain, Linda Nocera, Barbara Pritts, Rose Seck, Darlene Smith, Carol Thorne and Ann Wiley.

It was noted that Jane Brower retired from Toronto City Schools as a chemistry and physics teacher. She also was the junior class adviser.

Julie Blanton, chairman of the scholarship committee, awarded Dani Carroll the chapter’s $250 scholarship.

Pritts recognized full-time teachers Dani Carroll, Lindsay Clifton, Shanley Demitras, Holly Dodds, Stephanie Glasure, Donna Iachini, Nichole Locke, Darlene Mason, Victoria Nurczyk, Janice Pyles, Ellen Swickard, Diane Thomas, Carole Thorne, Lisa Truman and Marlene Wolf. They were asked to share something about school.

Under committee reports, Carolyn Kibble explained that members should pay attention to anything to do with the Public Employee Pension Transparency Act.

Rose Seck reported her committee, history and research/educational excellence, brainstormed ideas on how to get information out to teachers to become members. They are considering going to the buildings and talking with teachers and also considering giving school supplies to teachers instead of students.

Linda Nocera, membership and necrology, reported she had DKG pins to sell.

Julie Blanton, Scholarship and World Fellowship, explained that the Edison School District would be asked to apply for the Beginning Teacher Grant. Buckeye Local will be added to the list of school districts. Teachers who have received the grant should be asked to be members of Alpha Mu. The Chinese auction is in December.

Ann Wiley reported the next meeting will be held Oct. 13 at Amsterdam United Methodist Church. A schedule conflict will move the March meeting to Harlem Springs. Baskets were won by Donna Iachini and Nancy Shuster, and $146 was collected.

The foster bags collection was $87.

Rose Seck thanked everyone for their monetary donations for school supplies.
