Academy of Lifelong Learning

hosting open house Saturday

STEUBENVILLE — The Academy of Lifelong Learning will preview its schedule of classes and events during its fall semester open house set for 1 p.m. Saturday in the Totino Room, St. Joseph Center, Franciscan University of Steubenville.

Light refreshments will be served.

The Academy of Lifelong Learning involves no tests and no homework — “just a nice group of people who attend some interesting programs for the adult community,” notes academy President Iris Craig, in her comments in the fall newsletter.

The fees are $60 per person and $100 for married couples, a cost that entitles members to all classes. There is a 10 percent discount for enrolling a new member. As a bonus, a member may bring a guest to one session of a four- or six-week class.

The open house will include a 50-50 drawing and a Chinese auction. Proceeds will benefit a nontraditional student at Franciscan University who is working toward a degree.

There is a six-week schedule of classes at various locations, beginning Oct. 1, in addition to tours of three downtown Steubenville churches and a visit to the River Museum in Wellsville.

Some of the class topics are: “Understanding Social Media Today and Its Impact Upon Our Culture;” “The World Within: Mary Todd’s Triumph and Tragedy as First Lady;” “All the World’s A Stage: The Life and Legacy of John Wilkes Booth;” “Believe It Before You See It;” “Handmade Greeting Cards;” “The Pen Is Mightier;” “Immigration Today;” “Falconry;” “The Ghost of Owl Town;” “The History of Belly Dancing;” “U.S. Supreme Court Landmark Rulings;” and “Revitalization,” which will be held at Leonardo’s Coffeehouse at 159 N. Fourth St.

The academy is open to all Tri-State Area residents age 50 and older and offers continuing educational opportunities. The forum welcomes returning academy members along with new and prospective members. For information, contact Craig by phone between the hours of 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. at (740) 544-5169 or by e-mail at iris.213@yahoo.com.
