Prospective member Kim Ashton, left, and Regent Karen Blanc with Ashton’s crazy quilt -- Contributed

STEUBENVILLE — The Fort Steuben Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution met Sept. 8 at the Historic Fort Steuben Visitor Center with Chapter Regent Karen Blanc presiding.

Nancy Valles gave the invocation and benediction, and opening ceremonies included the involvement of DeeAnn Greene and Vickie Joseph, second vice regent.

Diane Bowers gave the president’s general message, noting that the 2018 Continental Congress had just wrapped up. It included the announcement of the Pathway of the Patriots Project, the goal of which is to plant 250 trees along the Schuylkill River from Bartram’s Garden to Valley Forge. Each tree will be named for a patriot.

The American Spirit, the DAR magazine, won the 2018 APEX Awards based on excellence in graphic design, editorial content and overall communications excellence for its January 2018 issue. Providing a subscription of it to a local library is encouraged.

Bowers introduced program speaker Kim Ashton, a prospective member who spoke about her family’s connection to Myles Standish and the Mayflower. She said her great aunt Lula J. Elder from Weirton was a friend of Betsy Standish and that she gave her a small trunk owned by Myles Standish. She shared the story of how her relative came to have the trunk and what became of it. She also displayed for the chapter a crazy quilt her relative had made.

In an American heritage report, member Mary Ann Jesse said Lake Conneaut has a D Day celebration featuring more than 1,800 re-enactors demonstrating what the invasion of Normandy looked like during World War II. To learn more, visit www.ddayohio.us/schedule.

The chapter received a thank-you note from Ashley Eby, a DAR Fort Steuben scholarship awardee.

Treasurer Beverly Livingston reminded members interested in donating toward scholarships to make checks out to Fort Steuben DAR Scholarship Fund.

Susan Welch gave a registrar report.

Ashton and Sue Davidson are two of 10 prospective members for the chapter.

In committee reports, Mary Ann Jesse shared a list of ideas to support veterans. The Wright Patterson Air Force Base, for example, has a coupon corner where coupons are collected and shared at the commissary. She suggested the chapter do that and noted that food, restaurant and department store coupons can be used.

Under women’s issues, members were urged to consider writing an essay to enter in the women’s issues category. Essays must be no more than 1,800 words and include one of the following topics: Career, family or health. Entries must be submitted in December for the January judging.

Under old business, it was noted that the fall fun fair was attended by Joseph, Valles and Blanc. The chapter received two awards — chapter achievement award level two and 100 percent applications verified without errors.

In new business, Greene and Ashton volunteered to decorate two centerpieces for the state conference hosted by the North End District.

Announcements included suggestions for speakers for next year; the need for volunteers to serve on the nominating committee; an appeal for ideas for a community project; and a reminder to save Box Tops for Education to send to the DAR school.

Members were reminded to fly the flag on Patriot Day, Sept. 11; Constitution Day Sept. 17; and Columbus Day, Oct. 12.

The next meeting will be held Oct. 13 at Froehlich’s Classic Corner in Steubenville.
