Women’s golf news


Blackmoor Ladies League played a “Four-Gal Scramble” on Aug. 27.

Winners of the event were Lori DeFallo, Brenda McCloskey and Cheryl Black. Kathie Moore had long drive on hole No. 8.


The Cadiz Women’s Golf League played “Putt Poker” on Aug. 29. Cards were passed out to golfers for each one putt.

Hostesses Donna Griffin and Donita Rush announced the winners as: Best poker hand, Sherry Sapon with 4 aces, followed by Donita Rush with a straight, then Glenda Sensel with pairs of kings and threes.

The putt pot was split between Sherry Sapon (28), Tracy Amos (29) and Kathy Newburn (29).

Birdies were achieved by Sherry Sapon on hole No. 10, Kathy Newburn on hole No. 1 and Lori DeFallo on hole No. 14. Peg Buchanan had a chip-in on hole No. 3.

This week’s play will be a fun game using only three clubs and a putter. Hostesses will be Jan Shultz and Tracy Amos.



Spring Hills Thursday Evening Golf League held the 18-hole club championship with Mary Arehart, president, announcing the following champions for 2018:

Kathy Moore and her committee announced the end-of-the-year banquet will be held Sept. 20 at Scaffidi’s Restaurant and Tavern in Steubenville.

Vickie Grant announced play-away day was to be held Aug. 30 at Beaver Creek Meadows and the “Girls Golf Trip” will be held Sept. 11-12 at Wilksire and Zoar.

The Spring Hills Ladies Golf League Invitational Committee turned Spring Hills Golf Course into a successful 50th Birthday Party Golf Invitational on Aug. 2. Serving on the committee were President Mary Arehart and officers Debbie Phillippi, Mary DiMichele, Linda Caputo along with photographer Claudia Norris and Brenda McCloskey, Eleanor Kindsvatter, Patty Garland, Judy Galbraith, Tammy Cox, Carmella Wallace, Arlene Owens, Mary Alice Meyer, Vickie Grant, Marge Alpino, Kathi Moore, Judy Sorrenti, Patty Powelson, Dru Fleshour, JoAnn Liberto, Ruth Lamantia, Donna Burch and Terri Barkley.

Presents, balloons and banners made for a festive atmosphere, according to organizers, and golfers attended from the Cadiz Country Club, Wheeling Country Club, Ponderosa and Oglebay.

Other winners were: Long drive, Hawthorne and Bainbridge; closest to the pin, Vidas; and longest putt, Galbraith.




The Steubenville Country Club Women’s Golf Association played a three-woman team, two best ball event on Aug. 29 with Marilyn Kenny as hostess.

Taking first place with a score of 15 under par was the team of Pam DiDomenico, YangJa Koh and PaulaHope. Kim Criss, Kenny and Shelle Pentes placed second, and Kenny won low putts with 29. DiDomenico birdied the par 3 12th hole, and there were no chip-ins so the money cup will carry over.

In the nine-hole golf group, Charlene Freshwater took low gross with Dotty Tegano winning low net and putts. Freshwater recorded a birdie on the par 3 second hole, and Tegano had a chip-in on the 5th hole.

This week’s event will be the Chili Open with Kenny and Hope as co-chairmen. Registration will be at 9 a.m. with a 10 a.m. start.


Town and Country Golf participants played their monthly scramble on Aug. 23 with three teams carding a 38.

The winning team consisted of Lucy Karaan, Patty Saccoccia, Norma Henson and Shirley Guida.

The second-place team included Minnie Walters, Dora Elizaga and Nancy Lelli.
