Solid waste board planning collections

FOLLANSBEE – The Brooke County Solid Waste Authority hopes this spring to hold community collections of discarded hazardous household chemicals and computers and other electronic devices.

Plans already have been made by the West Virginia Division of Environmental Protection to collect discarded tires on April 20, with other details to be announced.

On Tuesday the board authorized Becky Harlan, its recycling coordinator; to advertise for a business to accept hazardous household waste, such as cleaning products, some automotive fluids and paints and dispose of them in an environmentally safe manner.

The group hopes to coordinate the collection with another business for various electronic devices, including computers and televisions, which landfills can no longer accept because they contain potential contaminants.

The board has been awarded a $20,000 grant from the state Department of Environmental Protection for the two collections.

Brooke County residents also may bring their old computers and televisions to the board’s recycling center between 8 a.m. and noon Monday through Friday. The center is on Mac Barnes Drive, near the Brooke County Animal Shelter off state Route 2 in Beech Bottom.

In other business, the board:

Referred a proposed contract from Greenstar Recycling of Pittsburgh to its attorney, Michael Gaudio.

The board called a special meeting to meet with a representative of Greenstar earlier this month.

Glenn Kocher, the board’s chairman, said Greenstar has proposed an arrangement through which it might accept recyclable material from the solid waste authority but said he couldn’t comment further at this time.

In addition to accepting electronics at its recycling center, the board accepts tin and aluminum, paper and plastics numbered 1 or 2 at bins at Hooverson Heights Primary School, Follansbee and Wellsburg middle schools, Brooke High School, the Wellsburg Rite Aid and Bethany College.

Karen Williams, the board’s office manager, said Kohout Construction of Wellsburg will begin installing insulation at the recycling center soon. Kohout also will repair holes in the storage building’s roof for the $2,724 project supported by a state grant.

Authorized Harlan to apply for a $20,000 grant from the state Solid Waste Management Board for its day-to-day operations and a state-required routine audit.

Is slated to hold its next quarterly meeting at 6:30 p.m. April 23 at its office at 231 Rockdale Road.
