Gentile introduces veterans opportunity bill

COLUMBUS – State Sen. Lou Gentile, D-Steubenville, reintroduced the veterans opportunity bill Tuesday seeking to provide Ohio veterans with educational and job opportunities.

Gentile said the proposed legislation would establish a standardized system in which to award academic credit for veterans who have taken coursework or received specialized training while in the armed forces.

“Our veterans have many skills and talents they have acquired while serving our nation. We have an obligation to recognize those unique abilities and leadership qualities and assist our veterans as they transition back into the work force. This legislation will allow Ohio’s veterans to utilize their training and skills to become productive students and workers,” said Gentile.

Gentile’s legislation will implement a standardized academic transfer system for prior course work and or training.

“The bill also seeks to connect student veterans with prospective employers and alumni as they transition into Ohio’s work force,” noted Gentile.

“The Veterans Opportunity bill will continue to be one of my top legislative priorities. I look forward to working in a bi-partisan fashion with other members of the General Assembly and members of the Governor’s Executive Workforce Board in doing what’s best for Ohio’s veterans,” stated Gentile.

“It is only fair that we serve Ohio’s veterans as well as they serve us, and I am hopeful that this General Assembly will do just that,” Gentile concluded.
