Closing affects tax payments

WELLSBURG – Brooke County residents who owe real estate or vehicle tax for the second half of the current tax year are reminded the Brooke County Courthouse will be closed Saturday for the holiday weekend.

The tax was due March 1 but taxpayers may avoid interest on late payments made after April 1 by paying in person today, by mail if it’s postmarked before April 1 or online at www.brookecountysheriff.com/tax.

That doesn’t apply to those who owe tax on vehicles from preveious tax years.

Maureen Williams, chief tax deputy in the county’s tax office, noted those who pay with credit cards, in person or online, must pay a fee amounting to 2.9 percent of the payment or $2, whichever is greater.
