Hall of Fame planning 2013 induction
WEIRTON – The Weirton Hall of Fame Committee is accepting nominees for this year’s hall of fame class, which will be recognized in August during the fifth-annual induction ceremony.
According to the Weirton Hall of Fame Committee bylaws, all honoree nominations can be individuals with “outstanding” accomplishments, starting with the incorporation of the City of Weirton in 1947, and had to be a resident within the city limits for at least five years.
Individuals can be nominated into one of six categories: philanthropy; public service; music and fine arts; education and religion; sports and athletics; and business, industry and professionals. All nominations must be submitted in writing, signed and dated by the individuals making the nominations with the application by May 1.
The induction ceremony traditionally had been held in April, but was moved to August this year.
Chairman Frank Bohach said there are so many other activities going on in April, and even into the summer months. He said moving the event also allows the committee more time to plan and open opportunities to new venues the committee may not have considered.
Board members decided in February to seek available dates in August at the Knights of Columbus, the venue for last year’s event. Committee member Charlotte Vargo offered to contact the business and report back during the next meeting on March 14.
John Sorrenti said he would contact local businesses concerning medals and plaques to be given to the individuals accepted into the hall. He said providing individuals with something to remember the occasion and something to be passed down through the generations is an important part of the event as well.
“This banquet is about honoring the accomplishments of the people in our community,” said Sorrenti. “We want to make this a special and memorable event.”
Bohach said the committee has a few more meetings to take care of planning before the event and members will continue to give updates on plans as they come together.
“We hope to see the community continue to take interest in the Hall of Fame,” he said. “There are many great people in our community deserving of this honor and as long as the public nominates them, we can move toward that goal.”
