Peoples bank celebrates 110 years

MOUNT PLEASANT -The 110th anniversary of the Peoples National Bank of Mount Pleasant was celebrated on March 12 with light refreshments at each of the bank’s three offices, which are located in Mount Pleasant, Adena and Dillonvale.

Founded on March 12, 1903, by Michael Gallagher, the bank is one of Ohio’s oldest banks and is Jefferson County’s only locally owned bank. In the early 1950s, an Adena resident, Robert Walker, became CEO and chairman of the board of directors, serving for more than 50 years. His daughter, Elizabeth Walker Campbell, now serves as president. The members of the board of directors are all from Jefferson County.

During the first years of existence, it served as a payroll office for the local coal mines. Throughout its history, it has successfully weathered the many ups and downs of the local and national economy. The bank survived through the Great Depression when more than 9,000 banks in the United States failed, and has remained stable during the banking turmoil of recent years, inspiring loyalty and confidence from its patrons.

In addition to providing banking services in three neighborhood offices, the bank has expanded its reach by entering into relationships with approximately 35 automobile dealers in the Upper Ohio Valley to provide indirect lending services to assist their customers in their purchase of motor vehicles. Friendly, personal service and prompt, locally made decisions are an important part of the bank’s philosophy.
