Fire reported at well site
WELLSBURG – Firefighters from several Brooke County and Western Pennsylvania departments were dispatched at about 5 p.m. Monday following a report of four trucks catching fire at a natural gas well site near Genteel Ridge.
The site was on property off Stanley Lane and leased by Chesapeake Energy from Russell Hervey.
Security personnel at the site didn’t permit media to enter the road, saying it was open only to residents and emergency personnel.
Pam Percival, a spokeswoman for FTS International, a subcontractor working at the site, said, in a press release, “FTS International equipment used for well completions was damaged in a fire at a West Virginia well site on April 8. No one was injured in the incident. Personnel working on the site followed proper procedures and evacuated the location. The incident is currently under investigation.”
Percival concluded, “We are grateful to Brooke County firefighters for their assistance in extinguishing the fire so quickly.”
Bob Fowler, Brooke County director of emergency management, said personnel at the well site quickly evacuated the site and reported the emergency, and the county’s tanker task force was employed to bring water to the site.
Firefighters filled pumper trucks from a hydrant near the Wellsburg Church of the Nazarene on state Route 27 and other sites and made several trips to the well site.
Fowler said, “The local fire departments did a wonderful job of working together.”
As the firefighters worked for about an hour to contain the fire, many residents could see from their homes along Route 27 and adjacent lanes dark billows of smoke emanating from the site.
