Hall of Fame accepting nominations
WEIRTON – The Weirton Hall of Fame Committee is still accepting nominees for this year’s hall of fame class, which will be recognized in August during the fifth-annual induction ceremony.
This year’s Weirton Hall of Fame induction will take place at 2 p.m. Aug. 4 at the Weirton Knights of Columbus.
Chairman Frank Bohach said several nominations have come in thus far, but the committee is hoping to see some additional input from the community. He said the committee is permitted to allow up to two individuals per category to be inducted meaning a maximum of 12 inductees.
“If anyone has someone they feel deserves consideration for the honor of being inducted, there is time,” he said, noting the committee will accept nominations until May 1.
Individuals can be nominated into one of six categories: philanthropy; public service; music and fine arts; education and religion; sports and athletics; and business, industry and professionals.
Bohach said a price for the tickets has not been set as of yet, but only 250 tickets will be sold on a first come, first serve basis. He said as the committee looks through the applications, the remaining details for the event will be announced.
“This is an exciting time. I think we’re all looking forward to seeing who has helped shape our community and bring notoriety to our town,” added Bohach.
According to the Weirton Hall of Fame Committee bylaws, all honoree nominations can be individuals with “outstanding” accomplishments, starting with the incorporation of the City of Weirton in 1947, and had to be a resident within the city limits for at least five years.
All nominations must be submitted in writing, signed and dated by the individuals making the nominations with the application by May 1.
