Memorial additions to be unveiled

WEIRTON – Recent updates to the veterans memorial on Three Springs Drive officially will be unveiled in a special ceremony May 24.

The Leadership Weirton Class of 2013, working with the American Legion Post 10, has spent the last several weeks fundraising to purchase new flags and benches for the memorial, which is located near the Wal-Mart Supercenter.

Members of the Leadership Weirton program, which is offered each year by the Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce, are inviting the public to attend the ceremony at 10 a.m. May 24, when the additions will be revealed to the public.

All told, the class plan to replace seven flags at the memorial, perform landscaping work around the memorial and purchase several new benches to be place on the memorial grounds.

As part of the Leadership Weirton program, each class is required to plan and implement a group community service project prior to the completion of the program year.

“I’m really proud of this year’s group,” Chamber President Brenda Mull said. “I think the project they’ve selected will mean a lot to many in our community.”

Members of the Leadership Weirton Class of 2013 include Mary Lee Ammon, Larry DeRosa, MaryLou Martire-Pittman, Marisa Marino, Karen Mason, DeAnn Greene-Marszalek, Renee Salkovick, Jennifer McHenry, Alecia Sirk, Patty Soplinski, P.J. Tokash and Danielle Welshans.
