Park readied for the season

WEIRTON – Volunteers are putting the finishing touches to spring beautification efforts at Marland Heights Park, planting flowers and clearing branches in advance of Saturday’s benefit concert.

Smitty’s Carpet’s Tom Bowman on Tuesday began installing new carpet in the miniature golf course, a job that, weather permitting, was set to be completed Wednesday.

Marland Heights Community Association President Doug Jackson said materials and labor were donated by Smitty’s located in Steubenville. He said the flowers also were donated by members of the business community.

He said they’re also planning to redesign the holes, replacing the traditional houses and windmills with nostalgic structures representing the different departments of a steel mill.

Jackson said Saturday’s benefit will feature a wine-tasting as well as a jazz concert featuring Broadway star Erin Burkett.

The wine tasting, slated from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., features 14 winemakers from a seven-county area stationed in the park’s main shelter who will compete for first, second and third place. Medals will be awarded, based on the number of votes they receive from concert-goers.

Burkett will take the stage at 7 p.m. Tickets are priced at $20 each, which includes both events.

“Two extra-large tents are being brought in for the concert for seating,” Jackson said, noting the tents, to be placed on the basketball court, mean the concert will be a go “rain or shine.”

Jackson said he’s pleased with advance ticket sales, which he said have been strong. Tickets are still available at designated vendors, including Marland Heights Pharmacy, Tri-State Pharmacy, Weirton Chamber of Commerce, Gus’s Goodies, PS Marketing and MHCA members. They’ll also be sold at the park the evening of the event.
