Burgettstown plans Community Days activities

BURGETTSTOWN, Pa. – The Burgettstown Community Days will be held June 28-29 in the borough building and volunteer fire department parking lot, located at 1507 Main St., and along the 1500 block of Main Street.

The event will begin with an opening ceremony at 6 p.m. June 28, during which the Burgettstown Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and Boy Scout Troop 1350 will present the flag. Local politicians will be invited to participate in the ceremony. The ceremony will be followed by a performance by Bill Chamberlain’s vocal students.

The event will include live entertainment from several area bands, including Iron Skillet, The Majors, US Kids, Spinning Jenny and Zuke. Rainbow the Clown also will be on hand both days, making balloon animals and performing strolling magic. The Burgettstown Kids Center will host 25-cent bingo, and small games of chance will be available. The event also will include drawings and Chinese auctions.

TNT Pizza will sponsor the fifth-annual eating contest with this year’s challenge being wings. It will be held at 2 p.m. June 29.

There will be 10 participants each in two categories – one barbecue wings for children 18 and under and an adult category for hot wings. Top eater will be crowned the “Wing Champion of Burgettstown.” Those interested in participating in the contest can sign up at the Kids Center until the contest begins.

Throughout both days, games will be available, operated by volunteers from local businesses, churches and organizations.

Volunteers set up and run games in exchange for advertising their business or group. Workers are encouraged to wear their company shirts and hats as well as pass out business cards, literature or flyers promoting their business.

Any business, organization, club, family or group wishing to help out with manning a game booth to benefit the Community Day Fund is urged to call 724 947-0744.

Also, nearly 50 booths offering craft vendors, novelties, entertainment and food will be available. The event is still accepting craft vendors, who should contact Reedy at (724) 947-0744.

The event is funded through the advertising banner program, in which area businesses, organizations, families and charitable groups “purchase” banners on which their names are displayed. The banners are hung throughout the downtown area for approximately six to eight weeks.
