Club to ‘Ride for a Reason’ on Sunday
WEIRTON – The Red Knights Firefighter Motorcycle Club will be riding for a reason Sunday.
The Red Knights’ fifth-annual “Ride for a Reason” Tri-State Poker Run will begin at noon, starting and ending at the Wellsburg Volunteer Fire Department banquet hall on 12th Street in Wellsburg.
This year proceeds have been earmarked for Victims of Fire and the Coats for Kids programs.
“We have riders confirmed from Johnstown, Pa., Charleston, W.Va., and Columbus, along with Pittsburgh,” organizer and Red Knights member Fred Marsh said. “We do this once a year, and it’s open to the public. We usually get anywhere from 150 to 200 bikes, which brings in anywhere from 175 to 225 people.”
The 100-mile course will take riders through West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Ohio, with three stops.
Marsh said the Red Knights, organized in 2008, held its inaugural poker run the following year. Proceeds from the event have helped fire victims pick up the pieces, he said.
“We come up with either money for lodging or a gift card so they can get clothes or other things they need,” he said.
Marsh said the Red Knights helped victims of 25 fires last year, distributing “close to $5,000 or $6,000,” he said. “So far this year’s we’ve done 15 fire scenes, I don’t know what the dollar amount is.”
This year, they’ve also earmarked half the proceeds to purchase winter coats for children in need.
The entry fee is $20 for drivers and $15 for passengers. Cars also are welcome. Dinner and entertainment will be provided immediately after the poker run.
There also will be prizes for best and worst hands and a “bike show off” contest.
