Four seek Wellsburg 4th Ward seat

WELLSBURG – Residents of Wellsburg’s 4th Ward may choose from four candidates to represent them on city council, but none of them will appear on the ballots in the June 11 general election.

That’s because no one declared his or her candidacy before the filing period for candidates ended, but four individuals have since filed as official write-in candidates for the seat.

As a result, their names will be posted at the ward’s polling place and voters who want to support one of them must write in the candidate of their choice.

The four are: Charles Harris of 2501 Charles St., Janet P. Knox of Rear 82 26th St., Virginia Mae McAfee of 72 27th St. and Mark Williams of 2311 Main St.

Harris didn’t respond to requests for information.

A Wellsburg resident since 1995, Knox is a graduate of Wintersville High School and the University of Phoenix, where she earned a degree in accounting.

She is employed by the Brooke County Public Library and Brooke County Review and worked previously as a manager of local restaurants and an independent payroll accountant.

Knox is a volunteer with the Brooke-Hancock American Cancer Society Relay for Life, Brooke County Community Emergency Response Team and Brooke Hills Park.

She said if elected, she will be a voice for residents of the 4th Ward and available to meet and hear from them, with her address and phone number made public for their use.

A Brooke High School graduate and Army veteran, McAfee has been employed for eight years as a tractor operator for Greenwood Cemetery in Wheeling. Prior to that, she was a supervisor for WFF Facilities Services at West Liberty University, worked for many years at the Wellsburg Pizza Hut and Town House restaurant and for several years in security and as a certified nurse assistant.

“I know how to work with people and to listen to what they say,” she said.

McAfee said if elected, she will explore ways to attract visitors to the city and welcome ideas for improving the 4th Ward.

A Brooke High School graduate, Williams has been employed since February in the environmental department at ArcelorMittal. Prior to that, he was employed for eight years by the city’s wastewater and water treatment plants.

He has volunteered his time since 2007 to the New Year’s Eve celebration on the Wellsburg Town Square and said he’s been pleased to have helped increase the event’s attendance.

“As councilman I would like to see the city offer weekly or monthly activities for our citizens – everything from movie nights to open mic concerts. I would also greatly welcome ideas about improvements that could be made to the 4th Ward area of Wellsburg,” Williams said.
