Man dead, wife hurt in Brooke shooting
WELLSBURG – A man is dead and his wife is being treated for a gunshot wound at a Pittsburgh hospital following an apparent domestic dispute Friday evening, Brooke County sheriff’s deputies said.
The victims were identified as Diane Grooms and her husband, Richard.
Sheriff Chuck Jackson said the 911 call was placed by Mrs. Grooms, who was able to drive to safety despite her wound. Upon arriving at the scene, he said Mrs. Grooms told them she’d been shot by her husband.
While on scene, Jackson said officers spotted a car, believed to be operated by Mr. Grooms, approaching and then retreating back toward the Grooms’ home. When they arrived at the residence, the vehicle was parked and unoccupied.
The sheriff said numerous attempts were made to contact Grooms inside his home, and when he didn’t respond they secured the residence and called the West Virginia State Police Special Response Team to assist.
Once there, WVSPSRT entered the home and found Grooms dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Jackson said police from Wellsburg, Follansbee and Beech Bottom also assisted, along with local firefighters and ambulance personnel.
