Stars and Stripes fireworks show set
STEUBENVILLE – Final approval for the fireworks for 2013 Stars and Stripes Concert and Festival was granted Wednesday by the city fire department.
Fire Chief Carlo Capaldi and Fire Capt.-Inspector Tom Burchfield inspected the launch site Wednesday on the hillside behind Hollywood City Center.
“This is the third year in a row the fireworks have been set off from this spot, and it is ready to go. R.J. Stewart of Pyrotecnico of New Castle, Pa., was up here Tuesday and cut all the grass. So it is a go for the fireworks show,” declared Capaldi.
“The show will go off at approximately 10 p.m. We will meet with the Phil Vassar people Sunday to know what his final song at the Sunday night concert will be. When he sings that last note we will be ready to start our show from the hillside,” said Stewart.
“We will have appropriate music being broadcast by WCDK-FM during the fireworks show. We will start with some small shells but we will try to keep everything up in the air for everyone to see the spectacular show,” said Stewart.
“I am very excited because we had a great show here last year and I am looking forward to good weather and another good fireworks show,” added Stewart.
Mayor Domenick Mucci said he is also excited because the fireworks have been an annual event in the city for many years.
“I want to thank TEAM Automotive for its assistance in providing the fireworks show that will be viewed from almost every point in the city. And, while I know the weather Sunday night will be perfect, I have to set a backup date. That will be the night of July 4 – but I don’t anticipate any inclement weather,” stated Mucci.
Stewart said he will have most of his 11-person fireworks crew at the site to set up the display racks and then to make sure the fireworks go off as planned.
“We do this for a living and are very well prepared. The entire show will last at least 28 minutes, and I know people will enjoy the fireworks. This is my hometown, and so I always try to provide something a little more exciting for the audience,” remarked Stewart.
Burchfield said the road leading from Hollywood City Center to the Laurels will be closed to all traffic Sunday and will remain closed until after the fireworks show is finished.
“We also discourage people from trying to sneak into the adjacent cemeteries during the show. There are many great places to watch the show from,” said Burchfield.
Mucci said an excellent spot to view the fireworks will be in Harding Stadium following the Stars and Stripes Concert.
“People in the stadium can just sit back and see the show go off before their eyes,” he said.
A free Family Fun Zone will start at noon at the Harding practice field, and a beer corral with live entertainment by Rose Angelica will be set up in the Hollywood City Center parking lot.
Harding Stadium gates will open at 4:30 p.m. Sunday.
The Joseph Sisters of Wheeling will take the stage at 5:30 p.m. They will be followed by the Todd Jones Band at 6:45 p.m. and headliner Phil Vassar at 8:30 p.m.
Advance tickets for the 2013 Stars and Stripes Concert and Festival are still available through Saturday at Kwik King stores in Steubenville, Wintersville, Toronto, Follansbee and Weirton. Tickets also are available at Peoples National Bank branches in Adena, Dillonvale and Mount Pleasant; the customer service center at the Fort Steuben Mall; the visitors center at Historic Fort Steuben; at the chamber office at 630 Market St., Steubenville; or online at jeffersoncountychamber.com.
General admission tickets for the concert are $15 and reserved seat tickets are $20 if purchased in advance. On the day of the concert, the general admission tickets will cost $20 and reserved seat tickets will be $25.
“We will be accepting credit cards and debit cards at the ticket windows at Harding Stadium on Sunday,” said Chamber President Sue Hershey.
“This promises to be an excellent day and will close with the fireworks show. There is no better way to spend a Sunday afternoon and evening,” remarked Hershey.
