Thirty teams aid United Way

WEIRTON – Gray skies and the threat of rain couldn’t keep the crowd away from the Weirton United Way Golf Classic Monday at Williams Country Club.

The 32nd annual golf scramble tournament held to benefit the Weirton United Way kicked off just after 10 a.m., with 30 teams registered to compete.

“We’re very grateful for the support from our Weirton area businesses,” Tournament Director John Kirlangitis said before the tee-off, adding the tournament had another overwhelming response from the community. “There’s obviously a lot of generous people.”

In particular, Kirlangitis offered appreciation for long-time platinum sponsors ArcelorMittal Steel and CrossIT Information Technology Sales and Solutions.

“They’ve supported us for close to a decade,” Kirlangitis said. “We wouldn’t be where we are today without those two organizations.”

In addition to the scramble itself, participants also could take part in a variety of skills contests during the day. There also were three hole-in-one prize opportunities, including a new Kia offered by Lyle’s Auto, and prizes from R.E. Saxon Jewelers and L.S. Jewelers.

A total raised during the event was not immediately available.

Proceeds from this year’s Golf Classic will benefit the Weirton United Way’s 2013 campaign, which will raise approximately $280,000 for 15 area member agencies.
