Separate Steubenville shootings leave one dead
STEUBENVILLE – Two shootings at separate residences in Steubenville early Wednesday morning left one man dead and Steubenville Police investigating what appears to be a drive-by incident.
Derrick Williams, 18 of 1307 Orchard St. was pronounced dead at the scene after sustaining a gunshot wound to the back of the head, according to Steubenville Police Chief William McCafferty.
The chief said police were called at 3:22 a.m. after receiving reports that shots had been fired at 1124 Clair Ave. McCafferty said police arrived to find a deceased male with a gunshot wound to the head.
“People (at the scene) said bullets were coming through the house,” McCafferty said. “The victim was struck in the back of the head.”
The chief said no one else at the residence was injured.
Police also responded at 4:02 a.m. Wednesday to reports that shots had been fired at 1317 Plum St. Police arrived to find 17, 7.62 caliber spent casings from a presumed assault rifle and seven spent pistol rounds. McCafferty said none of the four residents at the house was injured, and it’s still unclear what occurred. McCafferty said motives for the shootings were unknown. He added the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is involved in investigating the second shooting.
