Serbian church picnic set for July 28

WEIRTON – An annual celebration of church heritage is fast approaching with the Holy Resurrection Serbian Festival Picnic.

Traditionally held on the fourth Sunday in July, this year’s picnic will take place from noon to 9 p.m. July 28 at the Serbian Picnic Grounds in Weirton.

Nino Karas, a member of the organizing committee, explained the picnic has been held for years, with past and present church members attending, often coming from around the country.

“It’s evolved into kind of a homecoming reunion for the church,” Karas said.

People are set to come from the Carolinas, Tennessee and parts of the Midwest this year, according to Karas, and have come from as far as Washington state in the past.

Admission is $2 and the event is open to the public.

A variety of food is being planned for the day, including barbecued lamb and chicken, grilled cevaps, cabbage rolls, kielbasa and sauerkraut, cabbage and noodles, and other dishes.

Karas said the grilled sausage is always a big draw for visitors.

There also will be a bake sale throughout the day.

“Everybody in the parish bakes and brings in baked goods,” Karas said.

Karas warned, however, the lamb will be on a first-come, first-served basis, and orders of half or whole lambs must be submitted ahead of time.

Live music will begin at 1 p.m., including the Holy Resurrection Tamburitzans, the Silver Strings and Srpski Sinovi.
