Council to discuss vehicle purchase

WEIRTON – Weirton City Council will be asked Monday to approve the lease-purchase of two new vehicles for the Public Works Department.

On Wednesday, the Finance Committee recommended council purchase a 2014 Hino dump truck for the department. The truck, priced at just over $114,000, was made in West Virginia. The department has opted to reuse the spreader it has, shaving several thousand dollars from the cost.

Committee members also recommended council buy a 2014 Ford Explorer Interceptor. The vehicle is priced at just over $29,000 and replaces a vehicle that has been in service more than a decade, Public Works Director John Brown said.

Both vehicles came in under budget, Brown said.

The committee also recommended contracting with Morton International for road de-icing salt. The company, based in western Pennsylvania, bid $48.54 per ton, slightly more than $9 a ton less than the city paid last year.

“That’s a pretty good price,” Brown said.

City Council meets Monday at 7:30 p.m. in council chambers.
