Weirton man struck, killed by truck
WEIRTON – Well-known Weirton businessman Dan Wilson was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer while walking in a westbound lane of U.S. Route 22 near the Harmon Creek exit at about 11:21 a.m. Tuesday.
Brooke County Sheriff Chuck Jackson said it’s not clear why Wilson, 57, was in the highway, but no charges are expected to be filed against the truck’s driver.
Wilson was a partner in the accounting firm of Bodkin Wilson & Kozicki.
Jackson said the driver tried not to hit Wilson, who was pronounced dead at the scene. He said the truck driver “swerved and left skid marks on the road. He did everything to avoid hitting him,” adding that statements from three witnesses at the scene support that.
He said at least three witnesses got out of their vehicles to render aid to Wilson on the busy highway and fortunately, traffic slowed when other drivers saw the truck stopped ahead.
Jackson said Wilson’s vehicle was found off the road near the scene.
The sheriff said the highway’s westbound lanes were closed until about 1 p.m. while the incident was investigated.
West Virginia State Police, Weirton Police, the Brooke County Ambulance Service and first-responder units from the Follansbee and Colliers fire departments also were called to the scene.
