School marijuana possession investigated

WELLSBURG – The Brooke County Sheriff’s Department is involved in an investigation of a pupil in possession of marijuana at Wellsburg Middle School.

Brooke County Sheriff Chuck Jackson said staff at the school learned Wednesday a pupil had brought a small amount of marijuana to the school and confiscated it.

“The incident was immediately reported to the Brooke County Sheriff’s Office, who with the Hancock-Brooke-Weirton Drug Task Force, obtained a search warrant for the student’s residence,” Jackson said.

The sheriff said a small amount of marijuana was found at the home in an area accessible to children, and officials with the state Division of Child Protective Services were notified.

“The investigation into the incident continues, and charges are pending,” Jackson said.

He said because state law prohibits his department from releasing the names of juveniles in such cases, no names or addresses will be released at this time.

Jackson commended staff at Wellsburg Middle School and the Brooke County Board of Education for its cooperation and assistance in the matter.
