Highway to be closed for Colliers Way project

WEIRTON – The east- and westbound lanes of U.S. Route 22 between Three Springs Drive and the Pennsylvania border will be closed from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. today, Friday and Monday while crews build the new Colliers Way Bridge.

Officials with the West Virginia Division of Highways said traffic will be maintained through the area using the Colliers Way exit and entrance ramps.

State highway officials said pending suitable weather, crews will be extending steel girders above the lanes.

Swank Construction Co. of New Kensington, Pa. is the contractor for the $6.5 million project.

Traffic on the highway has been maintained since construction began in September, though individual lanes have been closed at times while crews created abutments for the new span.

The new bridge is slated to be completed in October 2014.

Deterioration of the current span, which was built in 1966, has been attributed to its heavy use. The bridge is part of the primary route to Weirton Medical Center.

Repairs were made to the bridge in 2009 after a 4 foot by 3 foot portion of its deck collapsed onto U.S. Route 22.
