Police officer struck in Weirton

WEIRTON – A Weirton Police officer was struck by a vehicle in the Wal-Mart parking lot Monday afternoon after initiating a traffic stop for reckless driving.

The driver was 53-year-old Randolph Scott Strope of Bartleyville Road, Burgettstown. According to Sgt. Ricky Grishkevich of the Weirton Police Department, Strope is being charged with malicious wounding, battery on an officer, DUI and driving with a suspended license.

After allegedly hitting the police officer, the suspect fled the scene, and the chase ended in Pennsylvania when Strope wrecked into another Weirton police cruiser, according to officials.

Strope and the officer he struck were transported to Weirton Medical Center for minor injuries, and both have been released.

Strope is in custody and is being held in the West Virginia Northern Regional Jail on $44,000 bond.

The officer’s name is not being released at this time, and an investigation is ongoing.
