Sip and Shop event set for Burgettstown

BURGETTSTOWN – Sip and Shop An Old-Fashioned Christmas Holiday Shopping Extravaganza will be held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Our Lady of Lourdes McCashin Hall located at 1190 Main St.

“I like to buy local whenever I’m shopping, and all of these businesses are from the area,” said organizer John Cherok. “I remember when all these buildings downtown were businesses or services.”

In addition to a silent auction being held throughout the day, Sun-E-Day Auction Co. will hold a live auction at 6:30 p.m.

Vendors will include Fudgie Wudgie, More Than Just Books, Castellino’s Bakery, Gift Baskets for All Occasions, Silpada Party With a Purpose, Pink Zebra, H.O.P.E. Cards, Bea Dazzled by Suzy and Dove Chocolates.

More vendors are welcome. Those interested in becoming a vendor can call (724) 931-9020.

The Burgettstown Community Library will sell memory tree ornaments for $5 each. The ornaments will be customized and placed on the memory tree during a 6 p.m. Wednesday ceremony. The event will include music and refreshments. Following the Wednesday program, those participating are welcome to take their ornaments home.

The Our Lady of Lourdes 2014 Lottery Calendars will be available. The church also will be collecting personal care items for veterans in Veterans Administration hospitals and baby items and clothes for new mothers in need through Lifeline. Gifts will be collected for Angel Tree distribution. Those wanting to make donations to any of these causes are welcome to stop and drop off the items during the sip and shop.

Karina Garrison, award-winning author, speaker and creative writing instructor, will autograph books, including several from the “Chicken Soup for the Soul” series in which several of her essays appear.

Cornerstone Care will have an informational booth set up and will distribute information on the Health Insurance Marketplace.

Also, employees with Cookies by Clara will take orders for holiday trays.

There will be an old-fashioned toy display of Lionel trains, vintage toys and vintage and collectible ornament tree displays, including vintage ornaments from Slovenia and Russia. An auction for the decorated trees will be held in memory of Ustina and John Cherok Sr. of Burgettstown.

“You wouldn’t believe these ornaments,” said Cherok. “I’m talking about some beautifully made, glass ornaments from the old country. There’s going to be one tree just decorated in bells.”

The tree auction will benefit the Mercy Baptist Church’s furnace fund.

“My church just put a new furnace in, and I’m helping to raise money to pay for it,” said Cherok. “It reminds me of the saying, ‘on this earth, Jesus has no hands but ours.'”

Christmas movies, such as “It’s a Wonderful Life,” or Christmas music will be playing for the duration of the event.

“For me, it’s not Christmas without ‘It’s a Wonderful Life,'” said Cherok. “We’re going to have some wonderful, classic Christmas movies playing.”

Light refreshments, coffee and tea will be available.

Volunteers are still needed. Those interested should contact Cherok at (724) 931-9020 or
