Brooke County Fun Map on the way

STEUBENVILLE – The success of Fun Maps highlighting businesses and points of interest in Steubenville, Weirton and the Toronto-Wintersville area has led staff at the Herald-Star and The Weirton Daily Times to pursue another featuring Brooke County.

And the newspapers would like to hear from businesses and groups interested in being a part of what is sure to be a unique showcase of the wide variety of goods and services available in Brooke County.

“Since the first map was produced, we have received positive feedback from throughout the community,” said Cindy Kotsch, special events and marketing coordinator for the two newspapers.

Created by Lillian Brue, an artist with local ties, the maps depict the buildings of various merchants, professionals and organizations in a colorful, cartoon style.

Some business owners and civic leaders have even requested that their likenesses be caricatured for the maps, leading many to scan the maps for people they know.

Brenda Swiger, Brooke County advertising representative for the newspapers, is inviting all businesses, groups and organizations to take part. She noted they may be represented not only by buildings, such as stores, professional offices and churches, but also by vehicles, billboards and other signs.

For example, the Weirton Fun Map included a Weirton Transit Corp. bus and billboards for businesses that serve the city from outside it.

All of the Fun Maps produced to date can be viewed by clicking on the Fun Maps link on the left column at the Herald-Star and Weirton Daily Times websites at and

Copies of the maps as well as a puzzle version of the Steubenville map can be ordered online or in person at the newspapers’ office at 401 Herald Square in Steubenville. The maps are $1 each, while the puzzle is available for $19.95, not including shipping.

Swiger said businesses and groups may be included in the map for $225, which includes a framed display copy of the map, 20 copies of the map they may use as they wish and a 2 by 3 newspaper ad.

She noted participants will gain much exposure through the many copies of the map sold to area residents and others, through promotional materials for the maps and through the maps’ appearance on the Herald-Star and Weirton Daily Times websites.

Clicking on each business in the online maps brings up a box containing the business’ address and phone number, a link to its own website and an opportunity to “like” it on Facebook.

Swiger encouraged anyone interested in being featured in the Brooke County Fun Map to call her at (740) 283-4711 ext. 333.
