Firefighters battle Weirton, Wellsburg blazes
Firefighters in Weirton and from several Wellsburg area fire departments were called to two house fires Tuesday.
The Weirton Fire Department was called at 1:49 p.m. to a fire that destroyed a house at 28 Highview Circle, near Culler Road, and remained on the scene until 8:16 p.m.
Weirton Fire Department Capt. Robert Hinchee confirmed no one was home at the time of the blaze. He didn’t have the owner’s name.
A firefighter was injured after falling on ice outside the home and was transported by the Weirton Area Ambulance and Rescue Squad to Weirton Medical Center, where he was treated and released.
Hinchee said the house was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived and the roof collapsed, making it difficult to extinguish. Hinchee said because of the extent of the fire, a cause hasn’t been determined but it didn’t appear to be suspicious.
He said the fire remains under investigation.
Firefighters from Wellsburg, Franklin Community, Hooverson Heights and Follansbee responded to a house fire at 185 Megan Drive, near Rabbit Hill Road, at about noon.
Wellsburg Fire Department Capt. Tom R. Diserio confirmed Isaac Louthen, who lives there, was in the house but safely evacuated after seeing flames coming through ceiling tiles.
Diserio said the fire appears to have been electrical, originating from rafters above the kitchen and bathroom area. He said the firefighters were able to contain the fire and the house wasn’t destroyed.
Diserio noted a pumper truck was used to extinguish the blaze, so firefighters didn’t encounter problems that sometimes occur with frozen hydrants.
A pumper truck was also at the Weirton fire.
Because of the extreme cold, the Brooke County Emergency Management Agency was on hand at both fires to provide temporary shelter, food and drink and other assistance to the firefighters.
Firefighters from Steubenville and Hanover Township, Pa. manned the Weirton fire stations while the city’s firefighters were at the scene.
