Weirton museum schedules events for 2014
WEIRTON – The Weirton Area Museum and Cultural Center has a variety of events slated for the new year.
The calendar of activities begins March 15 with the sixth-annual Festival of Nations, featuring a variety of ethnic food, songs, dances and other entertainment.
The Festival of Nations is set for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Millsop Community Center.
The festival is chaired by Dr. J.K. Luthra.
The original Festival of Nations was founded during Weirton’s early history as a way to celebrate the community’s cultural and ethnic diversity. It was reformed in recent years by the museum to provide a similar celebration.
This year, the museum will be the host site for the local stop of the “Hometown Teams” exhibit provided by the Smithsonian Institution.
Scheduled from Aug. 17 to Sept. 27, it is sponsored by the West Virginia Humanities Council, and will explore the role of sports in American culture with a focus on teams and players of the Weirton area.
The exhibit also will include several speaking events related to local athletics, which will be announced at a later date.
Museum President Dennis Jones is serving as the coordinator for the exhibit.
The sixth-annual Robert Haworth Memorial Art Exhibition, chaired by Dr. Ray Greco and coordinated by Pam Makricosta, will take place Oct. 18 from noon to 4 p.m. at the museum.
The exhibition was created by the museum to feature the artwork of area residents and pay tribute to the influence of Robert Haworth, who was an art teacher at Weir High School from 1934 to 1969.
Additional events for the museum may be scheduled at a later time.
