Festival of Nations set to return March 15

WEIRTON – The annual celebration of Weirton’s cultural heritage will be making its return in the coming weeks.

The annual Festival of Nations has been scheduled for March 15, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Millsop Community Center.

The event originally was observed in the early years of the city of Weirton as a celebration of the community’s diverse ethnic background. It was recreated in 2009 by the Weirton Area Museum and Cultural Center, and includes an afternoon of food and entertainment reflective of several cultures which have called the area home.

“The response has been good,” Dr. J.K. Luthra, chair of the festival committee said, noting the final couple of weeks prior to the event have been busy with finalizing plans.

According to Luthra, this year’s festival will include representation of more than 20 nationalities and groups, with performers coming from Pittsburgh, Wheeling, and many other towns in the Ohio Valley.

Dances and music representing the nations of China, Germany, Greece, Hungary, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Mexico, Philippines, Poland, Russia, Scotland and others are scheduled to be showcased, as will performances by students at St. Joseph the Worker Grade School.

Various cultural displays also will be set up and several types of ethnic food will be available for purchase.

The Festival of Nations is free of charge and open to the public.
