Hair raising

WEIRTON – The hair is going to fly Friday in Weirton, and it’s all for a good cause.

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a volunteer-driven charity working to raise money for childhood cancer research, will host one of its signature hair-shaving events from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday at Krazy ‘Bout Sportz, 2850 Weir Ave., in Weirton.

According to organizers, more than 24 individuals have signed up to have their heads shaved as part of the event.

In addition, Miss West Virginia Miranda Harrison and Miss Pennsylvania Annie Rossellini are scheduled to be on hand, greeting attendees and taking part in a fashion show featuring the female shavees. Fashions for the “Bold, Bald and Beautiful,” fashion show will be provided by J Jones Evening Wear of Weirton, organizers stated.

The evening will be topped off with a 90-minute concert by Amanda Jones and the Family Band.

Other planned activities include a free throw competition, corn hole, a 50/50 drawing, food and prizes.

St. Baldrick’s coordinates its head-shaving events worldwide where participants collect pledges to shave their heads in solidarity with kids with cancer, raising money to fund research. Since 2005, St. Baldrick’s has awarded more than $127 million to support lifesaving research.
