State Auditor’s office provides online safety program

FOLLANSBEE – More and more of people’s lives are going online these days, and state officials are working to warn residents, especially the younger ones, of some of the dangers involved.

The West Virginia Auditor’s Office is visiting communities in the state to present the NetSmartz Internet Safety Workshop, in partnership with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Derek Walker, field services representative for the State Auditor’s Office, was at Follansbee Middle School Thursday for a presentation on the program, which covers topics aimed at keeping children safe while online.

NetSmartz covers many topics, including safety on social media, prevention of online bullying and overall safety measures to protect an individual’s privacy and identity online.

Auditor Glen B. Gainer is the chairman of the national white collar crime center and West Virginia commissioner of securities. A focus of his educational and outreach efforts focuses on keeping students and seniors safe online, prevention of identity theft and ensuring West Virginians are not victims of online scams and securities fraud.

For more information on these kinds of programs or other programs offered at the State Auditor’s office, contact Kristin Cross, Northern Panhandle field representative, at (304) 539-9308.
