Animal shelter 5K set for April 26

WEIRTON – With one week remaining, plans are being solidified for the Paws for Our Case 5K race in Weirton, set for Friday and April 26.

The event will benefit the Hancock County Animal Shelter Foundation.

Activities will begin at the Weirton Event Center, and include a one-mile kids’ run on Friday, with registration beginning at 6 p.m. and the race at 7 p.m.

The 5K run/walk will take place at 9 a.m. on April 26, with registration at 7 a.m. The 5K course will run through downtown Weirton and be timed by the Elite Runners and Walkers organization.

Registration for the kids’ run are $5 per child, with 5K fees set at $18 until Friday. On the day of the 5K, registration will be $25. Dogs also can take part in the races, but must be leashed, up to date on vaccinations and accompanied by a guardian.

Traffic in downtown Weirton will be rerouted from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday to assist with the race. Detour signs will be posted.

Prizes will be awarded in several categories. There also will be a grand prize of a $500 U.S. Airways travel card, a drawing for which all race participants will be entered.

Snacks are provided for both events, as well as musical entertainment.
