Harry Ameredes among 2014 inductees

WEIRTON – Harry Ameredes is among those to be inducted into the Weirton Hall of Fame this year, being recognized in the category of music and fine arts.

The sixth-annual Weirton Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. on May 4 at Undo’s in Weirton.

Tickets are available for $25 each at the Marsh Pipe and Supply, R.E. Saxon Jeweler and the Weirton Municipal Building. Approximately 250 tickets are being sold and will not be available at the door. The event is open to the public.

Ameredes graduated from Weir High School in 1939, and, with 40 years of service, he retired from Weirton Steel where he worked in the Tin Mill. He was a member of All Saints Greek Orthodox Church and the All Saints Senior Citizens. In his younger years, he played linebacker for the W.I.U. semi pro football team. He also served his country in World War II Special Forces OSS and was awarded the Bronze Star.

However, what Ameredes is best known for was being an avid woodcarver and artist, having won numerous awards. His work has been published in three different woodcarving books and his work was featured at the inaugural Haworth Memorial Art Exhibit in 2009. He was a student of Robert Haworth’s and credited the art teacher at Weir High School with helping train him in his artistry.

Ameredes also was known for his pen and ink illustrations.
