ID of body in river confirmed

NEW CUMBERLAND – The Hancock County Sheriff’s Department has confirmed the identity of a body found in the Ohio River near Chester earlier this month.

In a statement issued Monday afternoon, officials confirmed the female body as that of Sharone Napua Nakoa, 32, of Monaca, Pa.

Nakoa had been reported missing with the Monaca Police Department on Feb. 19, 2014.

The body was identified by the West Virginia Medical Examiner’s Office, which notified Hancock County officials Monday morning.

According to reports, the body had been spotted the afternoon of April 16 by men working at the East Liverpool dry docks near the Jennings Randolph Bridge.

The Chester Volunteer Fire Department launched two boats to conduct a recovery operation.

The body initially was transported to Weirton Medical Center before being sent to the state medical examiner in Charleston.

Hancock County Sheriff Ralph Fletcher explained initial identification had been made through personal items located at the time of the recovery.
