Youth Leadership lists ’14 graduates

WEIRTON – Thirty young residents completed their journey to becoming potential future leaders of the community Tuesday.

Members of the 2014 class of Youth Leadership Weirton, a program offered each year by the Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce, “graduated” Tuesday evening during a dinner held at Undo’s in Weirton.

Chamber President Brenda Mull congratulated the class, which includes students from Weir, Madonna, Brooke and Oak Glen high schools, noting their journey over the last several months took them from strangers to colleagues.

“You all did so well, you united as a class,” Mull said, adding the students and their parents should be proud of the class’ accomplishments.

Youth Leadership Weirton provides sophomore high school students with a glimpse into the business world, working to develop teamwork skills and ethics and teach about various types of personalities and how to learn from each other.

Carole Scheerbaum, of the Hancock County West Virginia University Extension Office, who assisted with portions of the program, said this year’s class was “pretty laid back,” but knew when to dig in and work hard to accomplish their goals.

Several of the students also reflected on their time in the program, noting learning how to work together and find common ground is needed for any task, even with different backgrounds and personalities.

“If you’re trying to accomplish a goal, you can still work together to achieve it,” Daniel Mayfield, of Weir High School, said.

Eva Bowser, of Madonna, noted the importance of finding common ground within a group, while Richard Daddario, also of Madonna, discussed the importance of being able to listen and learn from each other.

Adam Davis, of Madonna, raised the need to be able to communicate well with each other, while Ryan Kirk, of Weir, suggested the need to try and make the most of any situation.
