Fort Steuben youth applications set

STEUBENVILLE – Registration is open for the Summer Youth Program at Historic Fort Steuben.

According to Historic Fort Steuben Executive Director Judy Bratten, “Fourth- to sixth-grade students can experience life on the Ohio frontier in the 18th century when they participate in one of the two week-long sessions that include hands-on history, crafts, games, demonstrations and videos that make history come alive.”

Under the supervision of teacher Dave Nicholson, the students can take part an in-depth learning experience, according to Bratten.

“Besides the usual map and study skills, video presentations and classroom lessons, the young historians will tour the nine buildings of the Fort and the First Federal Land Office. They will learn about the native tribes that roamed the valley, their games as well as their traditions. A professional surveyor will instruct the children on the use of the chain and compass in measuring the Ohio wilderness. Baron von Steuben will have the students march and drill, while flintknapper Larry Wonderley will give them the opportunity to make their own arrowheads. A presentation on the travels of Lewis and Clark provides a glimpse into the exploration of the American West. One day is set aside for the youngsters to use the trowels and screens in the archaeology dig. And they can test their knowledge with a lively game of Fort Steuben Jeopardy,” Bratten explained.

“We have many students who return each summer because they enjoy the experience,” said Bratten, “It is an excellent way to introduce young people to the history of our country and our state. We are able to keep it low cost for families through a grant from the Wal-Mart Foundation.”

The program will run June 9-13 and again from July 7-11, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. weekdays. “The cost is $40 for the week of educational activities,” added Bratten.

The Historic Fort Steuben is located at 120 S. Third St. For information or to register, call (740) 283-1787 or e-mail info@oldfortsteuben.com.
