School tour to be held on Sunday

WEIRTON – Hancock County schools officials are ready to open the doors of the new Weirton Elementary School and allow area residents to take a look around the new school.

A public tour of the building, located on Pennsylvania Avenue in Weirton, will be held 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

“With so much excitement in town we thought that the building was far enough along to give the public this sneak peek,” Principal Frank Carey said.

Carey, who currently is principal at Weirton Heights Elementary, will be the head principal at the new school when it opens in the fall. Andrea Dulaney, principal at Broadview, and Stephanie Brown, principal at Liberty, will be assistant principals, assigned to oversee different areas of the building.

With a limited amount of parking available on the school property, officials are asking residents interested in attending the open house to park at Starvaggi Memorial Park.

“We will have buses shuttling visitors from the Starvaggi Pool parking area continuously beginning at 10 a.m.,” Carey said.

Weirton Elementary School is set to officially be dedicated Aug. 10, and open at the beginning of the 2014-2015 school year. It will replace the existing Weirton Heights, Broadview and Liberty elementary schools, which will be demolished under terms of the school levy which provided funding for the construction of the new school.

In addition to the open house, school officials have started a fundraising campaign to assist with the purchase of a welcome sign, books for in-class libraries and other materials.

“These projects are in the development stages and can only be accomplished through donations from sponsors, friends and the good people of Weirton and Hancock County,” Carey said.

All donations to the Weirton Elementary Development Fund will be recognized on plaques to be placed in the school, as well as the program for the August dedication.

Levels of donation include: $50 Patron; $100 Sponsor; $250 Benefactor; $500 Principal’s Circle; $1,000 Superintendent’s Circle; and $5,000 and up Founder’s Club.

Donations can be sent to: Weirton Elementary School, c/o Frank Carey, 160 South 12th St., Weirton, WV 26062.

Commitments also are being accepted from businesses and organizations wishing to be partners in education with Weirton Elementary School.
