Wine tasting to benefit United Way
WELLSBURG – The Tri-State Winemakers are proud of the vintages they produce, and they will be pouring their best during the United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley Wine Tasting set for 6 p.m. May 10 at the Wellsburg Elks Lodge, 834 Charles St.
Tickets are $15 each or two for $25. They can be purchased at the Brooke County Public Library, Brooke Review and the Wine Makers’s Loft or at the door.
For information, call the United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley at (304) 232-4625.
Riesbeck Food Markets Inc., a major sponsor, will present an array of hors d’oeuvres to complement the wines being served. Vintages will cover the range of reds and whites, from sweeter wines to drier selections.
Guests will have the opportunity to sample the wines and talk to the winemakers to learn about the properties of their wines as well as the techniques to produce them.
All proceeds from the evening will benefit the United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley, which merged with the Brooke County United Way several years ago.
The group supports area organizations, including the Brooke County Committee on Aging, which oversees the Brooke County and Greater Weirton senior centers; Catholic Charities West Virginia; and Brooke and Hancock County Salvation Army.
United Way leaders have reported the organization has reached about 91 percent of its goal of $777,777, thanks in part to its annual Night at the Races, which was held March 14 at Wheeling Island Hotel Casino Racetrack and netted $15,600.
Plans are under way for the Wheeling Feeling Chili Cook-off , which will be held June 7 at Wheeling’s Heritage Port. The city of Wheeling, with Rose Humway Warmuth as chair, will present the event.
It is sanctioned by the International Chili Society, so major winners will be eligible to take part in the international competition later this year. For information or application forms, visit www.wheelingevents.org.
